4 Stages of Competence
Dr Noel Burch at Gordon Training International developed the model of the four stages of learning or the four stages of competence.
We go through these four stages in the development of any skill or task or new experience. What I have adapted below is intended as a diagnostic tool for supervisors or leaders. Although I do think highly self aware people are able to use this to guide themselves through the four stages its primary use is for leaders.
I want to lead others this way but it is important note that we are not entitled to our supervisors to lead us in this way. Instead we should be grateful in the rare instances that we have supervisors who are good at this.
The goal for the supervisor is to use this as a diagnostic tool which then makes the prescription easy.
"Ohhhh.... I see what is happening... ____ is just in stage 2 so I need to let him know I am with him in this and it won't last forever...."
"Ahh... that is what is happening... she is just bored that is why she has been underperforming or short with me.... I need to give her a new opportunity"
"_______ is in her sweet spot which is great but I better start creating a landing spot so that we start talking about what she will do next so that we are ready to move into that the day she hits boredom"
The goal is short stage 2 and 4 and to generally always been in movement not stuck
